Must Reid Sports: Denver’s Dominating Defense helps Broncos start off undefeated

Dominating Defense helps Broncos stay undefeated

Reid Conant, Reporter

As the Denver Broncos head into week 7 of the NFL regular season with a record of 6-0, the defense has dominated. This Broncos team is built for the postseason this year with an incredible defense as well as, a new coaching staff.

So far this Broncos squad has looked like a completely different team compared to the past few seasons. In the last couple of years, we have seen an explosive offense with future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning at the helm. This season is the exact opposite.

So far the defense has forced 17 turnovers in the first 6 games including 10 interceptions and 7 fumbles recovered. Down the stretch, the defense has won games with huge turnovers at crucial times in the 4th quarter. Against the Oakland Raiders, it was Chris Harris Jr. with an interception for a touchdown and Von Miller with a strip sack on Derek Carr to clinch the win for the Broncos. Against the Minnesota Vikings in week 4, the Broncos caused quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to fumble in the last 2 minutes of the game sealing the victory. In week 1, Darian Stewart clinched the victory with an interception in the endzone once again under 2 minutes, to beat his former team, the Ravens. The defense is building off of last years defense that had 5 pro bowlers.

This season is another Super Bowl or bust for the Broncos and I believe that this is their best shot at winning a title since Peyton Manning has come to Denver. I have faith that Head Coach Gary Kubiak and Peyton Manning will figure it out on offense eventually, thanks to their experience. When this happens, look out for the Broncos come playoff time because the defense is extremely deep at every position. In 2014, when the Broncos went to the Super Bowl and lost to the Seattle Seahawks 43-8, that team was very banged up on defense and as a result gave up 43 points. This year, if a starter gets hurt the backups are way better than past years. If Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware get hurt it isn’t the end of the world because the Broncos have 1st round draft pick, Shane Ray and also a very impressive and productive Shaquil Barrett. Both of these guys have 2.0 sacks through 5 games in a very limited role. Let’s say linebackers Danny Trevathan and Brandon Marshall get hurt, the next guys up would be Todd Davis and Corey Nelson. Both players are exceedingly good backups that are fast and physical. If either safety TJ Ward, or Darian Stewart get hurt the Broncos have athletic and effective safety, David Bruton as the backup. The defensive line has great depth as well with 6 defensive lineman that have all played a lot so far. Derek Wolfe, Sylvester Williams, Malik Jackson, Darius Kilgo, Vance Walker and Antonio Smith.

With the best pass rush and one of the best secondaries in the league, the Broncos make it tough on any offense. New Defensive Coordinator, Wade Phillips has changed this defense from being a good defense to being a dominating defense with his style of aggression. Some people might say that this team isn’t ready to win a championship because of the way the offense is struggling. I look at it and say, they still are 6-0 and have beaten 3 teams that were in the playoffs a year ago so maybe they can. History has shown that 5 out of 6 Broncos teams that have started out 6-0 have made it to the Super Bowl. This has to be the year that the Broncos win the Super Bowl, especially with the clock ticking on Peyton Manning’s career. Maybe Peyton Manning’s skills are deteriorating a little bit but I don’t think it matters because the defense makes up for the lack of offense. I believe in this Broncos team and I think they can win it all with their powerful defensive line, fast linebackers and their smart secondary, along with their wise defensive shot caller.
