Mountain Issue: Why Vail Pass (in my opinion) is the worst part on all of I-70

If you like going to the mountains in Colorado, you’re like me. The views, the cold, the snow, and the sports are all things that I can’t get enough of from the mountains. If you like going up to the mountains, you aren’t alone.

If you want to get to the popular ski resorts, the fastest way there is through the road I-70. In the summer, it’s a piece of cake. In the winter, I-70 is completely changed. It takes constant maintenance from authorities during snow storms. On top of all the snow, you have to deal with bad cars, bad tires, and bad drivers. A bad car is a car with rear wheel drive only. They just can’t handle the steep grades covered in ice. Bad tires are anything that aren’t snow tires or they have been worn down and essentially turned into hard balloons. And bad drivers just don’t know how difficult and dangerous driving in the mountains can really be.

er with perfect tires and an off roading car. Vail Pass. From the lowest point you will climb 2,267 for 9.4 miles. When you climb 2,267 feet, the westbound descent to Vail is a seven percent grade for seven miles. It is poorly plowed and littered with potholes big enough to swallow a Fiat 500. If that wasn’t enough to scare you, there is a massive drop on one side of the road. So, if you are driving up to the mountains, make sure to take precautions and use caution when driving. Good Luck.
