Hot Starts Around the MLB

Turner Pruitt, Reporter

We are nearly 2 weeks into  the 2017 MLB season, and a handful of players are off to incredibly hot starts. While some of these players’ early success is not too much of a surprise, others have unexpectedly turned some heads. So, here are 3 of the top performances since Opening Day.

Yoenis Cespedes

In just 10 games, Cespedes has already hit 6 homers. This includes a 3 home run performance against the Philadelphia Phillies and another 2 bombs against the Miami Marlins. Cespedes’ power is no secret, however, his early dominance is very impressive. The Mets have certainly enjoyed his show of power as they are off to a 7-3 start.

George Springer

Starting just his fourth season, Springer is continuing to prove his young talent. So far, he is slugging .605 with 5 bombs. Last season, Springer hit a career high 29 homers, and I would be willing to bet he will break the 30 mark this year, now that he has a few years of experience under his belt. If the Astros are going to make a run this year, Springer will certainly play a big role.

Jameson Taillon

Playing in just his second season in the MLB, at age 25, Taillon started with a bang. In his first start, he faced a tough Red Sox lineup and was competing against a Cy Young Award favorite in Chris Sale. Despite the strong opposition, Taillon pitched 7 shutout innings and struck out 6 batters. Although this performance wasn’t enough to get the win against the talented Red Sox, Taillon’s performance was definitely promising for Pirates fans.
