Have you ever thought about what it’s like to be a teenager going out for a sport? The thoughts going through your head, the adrenaline starting to rise, I think they could all tell you that it’s a roller coaster of emotions. There are many sports you can tryout for in general and in high school. For Arapahoe High School the spring sports season is here and many sports are abroad. Some of the many competitive sports you can go out for are Soccer and Track.
Soccer is an intense sport and with tryouts the competition is high, track is an open team sport but the nerves for going out are the same. Tryouts for the soccer team last all throughout the week of February 26th, girls from grades 9 to grade 12 are trying out, and over 90 girls showed up. The head coach, Coach Hayes, talked about tryouts and teams and what they will consist of. He said that tryouts will be after school from 4:00 to 5:30 Monday through Friday. With many girls trying out, the school had an Idea to add a fourth team. The teams include Varsity, JV Black, JV Gold and Freshman/Sophomore teams. During the tryouts you will be watched by many different coaches, from all teams. They look for not only your skills but also what kind of teammate you are. They want to see what your true strengths are. Whether that’s speed, skills, or just yourself in general. They give the advice to just play the way you know how to play, Be yourself, and most importantly have fun with it.
Track is a different ball game. Track is a no cut sport and it is CO Ed. Many boys and girls do track as their main sport. With coach Lineman being the head track coach he has explained, Track will start at 3:50 everyday and end at 5:30. The goal of practice is to come and practice like you would for a meet. With open and Varsity teams the competition to run at a varsity level race is intense. Although from the outside track might seem fun, the work that is put in to get to a high point is another level of intensity.
In all, Arapahoe High School students competing for track and soccer have a busy season ahead of them. The anticipation of meets and games, and tough practices, the challenges they will face to the success the students will accomplish will all be worth it in the end.
